No one should hide their smile. It is the most basic form of connection between people. The natural, often involuntary and immediate response to happiness and humor, it is one of the simplest and most beautiful acts of expression. And yet too many people attempt to alter their smile by hiding their teeth, or at least self conscious on some level about the look of their teeth. While it should of course be encouraged that everyone come to love their natural smile, it can also sometimes help to be more comfortable with that smile with the help of a little cosmetic dentistry, or at least regular visits to your dentist’s office.
General dental care and cosmetic dentistry
Many people do not like to go to the dentist. This is a pretty common sentiment, but often the fear of pain at the dentist office is self-fulfilling. By avoiding regular dental visits and basic care, many people do not get the recommended maintenance that would soften the work the dentist has to catch up on after extended periods of time without the basic care and checkups. By the time you need a dentist to the degree that you cannot wait any longer, chances are the visit will not be as comfortable as it could have been had you simply kept up on the routine visits.
Cosmetic dentistry is a popular solution for those who do not want to go without the shining smile but that have not wanted to put in the work and maintenance to keep it throughout the years, or who want something a little extra, regardless of the kind of care that they have given to their natural smiles. Whatever the case may be, while cosmetic dentistry can accomplish a certain look, you still need to make sure that your oral hygiene practices follow your dentist’s recommendations.
Common dental hygiene practices
Everyone knows that flossing is the key to a healthy smile that stands up to the test of time, or at least everyone should know. But not everyone puts in the time for the tedious work, and not everyone visits their dentist enough to get informed of just how important it really is. Only about 22% of people say that they floss every day, though that number, sadly, could very easily be much lower, as there are many people who are not willing to admit that there could be an improvement in their oral health regimen.
And this is not the only common habit regarding dental care. Around 75% of people fail to get a new toothbrush as often as is recommended. Many dentists will say that you should be breaking out a new toothbrush every three months or so, but it also depends on how often you are brushing your teeth, and how quickly you start to see it wear down.
Smiles and the sexes
Almost everyone finds a smile to be an important attribute. In fact around 96% of adults believe that a good smile makes a person more attractive and appealing. And even more than that, at 99.7%, believe that a happy and healthy smile is significant by social standards, according to a survey conducted by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.
And when you break down the dental habits of men and women, they line up pretty closely, for the most part, though the averages suggest that women tend to do just a bit better than men. While 28.7% of women say that they always brush their teeth after every meal, only 20.5% of men say that they do so. Similarly, about 56.8% of women habitually brush their teeth two times each day, compared to 49% of men who do the same.
Every year, people in the United States spend a total $1.4 billion on products for teeth whitening. The numbers speak for themselves: smiles are important. But we should learn not only to take care of our smiles better, but also to appreciate the smiles we have, and beam with confidence.
