Most Americans care deeply about the health of their teeth, and most Americans have dentists whom they visit regularly for checkups and other work. A licenses dentist can do a lot of good, and a dentist will probably also have skilled and motivated dental assistants with them in the office. Preventative care at the dentist’s office can help keep a person’s full mouth of teeth healthy and looking good, and certainly no one wants to develop serious dental problems later on. Most dentists treat adult patients, but there are many pediatric dentists out there too who can care for patients under the age of 18. And in other cases, family dentists might be the best option. A family dentist can care for everyone in a client family, young or old. How can someone find a good family dentist, and what kind of dental procedures might be done at the office?
Anyone who does not have a regular dentist is encouraged to find one in their city or town as soon as possible. After all, dentistry currently ranks among the top 10 most trusted and ethical professions in the entire United States, especially since Americans dread the idea of tooth problems. Having a specialist to take care of their teeth can be a real relief, and once a child becomes old enough, his or her parents can find a dentist for them, too. Often, by the time a child is two years old, he or she is ready to start visiting a pediatric dentist. Another option is a family dentist.
Family dentists are a sort of family doctor. That is, they will have an entire client family at a time rather than single, private patients, and they can take care of any patient’s teeth regardless of age. Just the way a general family doctor can take care of patients young or old (and refer them to specialists), a family dentist can handle patients young and old. Often, children or the elderly have different dental needs from each other or middle-aged adults, so a flexible family dentist may be preferred.
An interested client can start with an online search based on their city and state, or their ZIP code. A search such as “family dentists downtown Boston MA” or “family dentists San Diego CA” can provide a list of nearby family dentist’s offices. The client may see the names, addresses, and more of each of these locations, and start narrowing the list down. Some locations that are deemed too far away to be convenient can be crossed right off the list, while others may be visited in person.
A client may also bring his or her young child along, since a child must be at ease when they are going in to see a dentist. If a child is uncooperative or frightened at a given dentist’s office, or around certain personnel there, that office may be a bad fit as a family dentist. If the child behaves agreeably, the customer can personally check over the dentist’s office. They can check for the prices of different dental procedures and the accepted health insurance policies, and the adult client can also consult the medical staff there. If a client verifies that the dentists and the assistants there are well-qualified and experienced, and trustworthy, the client may sign on with a family dentist.
Many different dental issues may arise at the dentist’s office, but there are some common ones that a patient may sometimes expect. Cavities are a typical dental issue, and they happen to kids as well as to adults. It has been estimated that as many as 40% of kids will suffer at least one cavity by the time they reach kindergarten age, and around 18% of kids aged five to 19 have untreated cavities. At the dentist’s office, children will be told how to take better care of their teeth, such as brushing them regularly and avoiding chewing on hard items.
Adult patients might get a root canal, where infected fleshy pulp in a tooth is removed, or adults might get dental implants. A missing tooth can be replaced with a dental bridge, and elderly patients may get dentures put in to replace many teeth.
